| THE JAMMEH FOUNDATION FOR PEACE HOSPITAL
In 1999, the
President, Alhagi Dr. Yaya Jammeh in his desire to see
peace not only in the Gambia, but in all over Africa
and the World at large, found it necessary to establish
a Foundation for peace. President Jammeh also believes that genuine
peace is only attainable where there is social justice,
and therefore the Jammeh Foundation for peace saw investment
in the social sectors of Education, Health and Food
Security as direct contributions to maintaining national
peace and stability.
The Jammeh Foundation for peace was born with
this goal.
1.1
VISION OF THE PRESIDENT FOR
THE GAMBIA
The
vision for president Jammeh for the Gambia, is a middle income country
by 2020, with a highly educated, skilled and healthy
citizenry.
1.2
JAMMEH FOUNDATION HOSPITAL
The great concern and care attached to the health sector
of The Gambia’s National Development Agenda by JFP’s
Founder, His Excellency President Jammeh, triggered
his acceptance, adoption and establishment of the JFP
Hospital, formerly Bundung Health Post, which is
now being developed into a full fledge Mother-Child
Hospital. Whilst Government ensures the development
of good public health services, the Jammeh Foundation
for Peace aims to complement Government’s efforts in
this sector. The President’s adoption of this health
post is equally buttressed by his knowledge and awareness
of the needs of the large urban poor in the Greater
Banjul Area and the large concentration of the population
in the Serekunda area and Bundung in particular.
The Jammeh Foundation for Peace Hospital
(JFPH) commenced work in the year 2000 providing essential
health services to a large population. The commencement
of outpatient services at the Jammeh Foundation Hospital brought significant reduction
in the outpatient pressure at both Serekunda and Faji
Kunda health centres.
As
mentioned above, the expanded facility will focus on
maternity and child care. Bringing these services to the doorstep of the highly
populated Bundunka Kunda and surroundings will be a
great contribution to help the urban poor in accessing
basic health services.

EXPANSION
OVER THE PERIOD 2004-2006
PHASE
1: 2004 - 2005
The
desire is to deliver the following additional services
by the end of 2004
1
Assisted delivery services
2
Laboratory Services
3
Inpatient services, 20 beds
4
Pharmacy services
In
order to achieve this there is need for additional infrastructure,
staff, equipment and supplies.
The
laboratory, currently under construction, has 5 rooms,
toilet facilities and a waiting area. It is envisaged
that, when this building is completed, it can temporarily
be used as consultation area. One or two rooms will
be used for the laboratory and the remaining rooms can
for the time being be used for consultation rooms.
This
will free up the wards and will pave the way for the
expansion to 24 hr. services. It is envisaged that as
a start, mainly delivery services will be provided on
a 24hr. basis. Currently the women of the area go to
the highly overcrowded Serekunda Health Centre.
Additional
staff will be provided by the Department of State for
Health. As staff limitations will be a bottleneck for
expansion, the Jammeh Foundation for Peace is currently
funding training of 3 nurses and 2 laboratory assistants.
PHASE
2: 2005 - 2006
By
the end of 2005/ first half 2006, the following additional
services should be included:
5
Basic Surgical services
6
Radiological services
7
Inpatient services, 60 beds
8
Blood Transfusion Services
To
achieve this there will be further need for expansion
of the facility. Plans are being drawn up for the construction
of additional infrastructure. These should include the
following:
1
Outpatient area, including the following services areas:
-
Gynaecological consultation room
-
Paediatric consultation room
-
General Medicine consultation room
-
General Surgical/Orthopaedic Consultation room
-
Nurses Screening room – to include weighing area
-
Minor theatre – Injection, dressing room
-

2

-
Maternity theatre
-
Labour rooms
-
Ante natal ward
-
Post natal ward
-
Paediatric ward
-
radiology services
-

NEED FOR EXTERNAL SUPPORT
The
timing of the implementation of the above development
plan is dependent on resources available. The Jammeh
Foundation for Peace is therefore seeking external support
to ensure timely implementation.
The
following aspects need consideration:
Construction:
The
laboratory complex is currently under construction and
will be completed soon.
Construction
plans for the main building are yet to be finalized.
Local fund raising has already ensured part of the funds.
As work is in progress additional fund will be solicited
from donors.
Human
resources:
Where
possible, the Department of State for Health and Social
Welfare will post staff at the Hospital to take into
consideration the expansion of services.
As
the Gambia faces an acute staff shortage
in the medical sector, the Foundation will fund the
training of additional staff as needed. The main focus
will be on in-country training at the School of Nursing and the University of The Gambia.
The
Foundation will seek for donor support to assist with
the funding of the training.
Equipment:
Quality
services largely depend on the availability of basic
quality equipment.
The
Foundation will seek donor support for the provision
of the necessary equipment.
Drugs
and Consumables:
The
need for drugs and consumables will also increase with
the expansion of the health facility.
It
is expected that over time, with the full operationalisation
of the facility, the incoming funds will also increase.
The main services which will generate income are the
laboratory services and the delivery services.
Though
eventually the Department of State for Health will be
responsible for the provision of these consumable items,
The Foundation will initially provide support during
the developmental stage of the health facility. This
will partly be done from its own resources. The Foundation
will also seed donor support for this crucial phase
in the development of the facility.
